# Bug Counting and Quantifying

This interactive insect game will engage students in collecting and counting bugs! Students will catch and count pompoms and use imagination, representation, counting, and qualitative skills during this play based math activity.

Students will be able to count and quantify a group of objects.

(5 minutes)
• Show your students some books and read or take a picture walk, if desired, and bring out a fly swatter.
• Pretend to a follow path of a fly buzzing around and direct your students' attention to group of pompoms on a floor or table.
• Swat pompoms and verbally model wondering how many you "caught."
(5 minutes)
• Demonstrate pulling off pompoms and counting as you place them in a jar, other container, or on an image of a jar.
• State how pleased you are that you caught a certain number of flies for your collection. Tell your students that you're going to label them with a number.
• Count out loud as you model numbering the flies.
(5 minutes)
• Repeat the process for catching bugs, and have students help you through the steps again.
• Discuss other ways you have collected and counted a quantity, such as counting napkins for snack, counting students for attendance, or counting tokens for classroom management. Have two or more students work together to demonstrate for the group.
(10 minutes)
• Set up materials for independent work by providing students with jars, whiteboards, worksheets, or file folders.
• Note: Trays are helpful to corral pompoms for individual students. Provide a bowl or bin for pompoms to scatter on trays. Demonstrate proper play with fly swatters and problem solving ideas for students when working together.
• Enrichment: Advanced students can sort by color or size instead of counting.
• Support: Draw circles on bug jar worksheets for easier placement and to help students understand 1:1 correspondence.

• Direct observation, work sample, peer feedback or assessment, and they're "ticket out the door" should suffice to check for understanding.
(5 minutes)
• During a question and reflection component, have students demonstrate skill and show work samples. Set up opportunities during the day for students to demonstrate concept with other materials.
