Learning Objectives
Students will understand the concept of a simile and be able to create their own similes.
Introduction
(10 minutes)- Write an example of a simile on the board.
- Explain that a simile compares two things using the word "like" or "as."
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling
(10 minutes)- Hand out the Easy as Pie and Clear as Crystal worksheets.
- Using the document camera, complete #1 on Clear as Crystal.
- Have the students underline the two nouns being compared (Chris and mouse).
Guided Practice
(15 minutes)- Complete any other problems you believe will help the students.
- Make sure they are underlining the two nouns being compared in each sentence.
- Allow students to work in pairs on the two sheets.
- Come back together and go over the answers using the document camera.
Independent working time
(10 minutes)- Hand out the Similes worksheet.
- Have students complete this on their own.
- Students can write more similes on the back of the worksheet.
Differentiation
- Enrichment Have students move onto metaphors or personification while going over the answers to the first two worksheets.
- Support Circulate the room and help students as needed. Give word banks if needed for Simile worksheet.
Assessment
(10 minutes)- Review the answers to the worksheet on the document camera.
- Assess students' understanding of the lesson content based on how well they did on their worksheets.
Review and closing
(5 minutes)- Review the definition of a simile.
