Is That My Home?
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to draw and write about animal habitats in the forest.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Display pictures of different forest animals. Ask students to think about what they see and where the different animals might live.
- Have students think about the question and then turn and pair share their thinking with a partner.
- Tell the class that they will now get to learn more about what they see in the pictures.

- Pause as you read to notice the different animal homes.
Guided Practice
(5 minutes)- Using a piece of chart paper, create a classroom anchor chart to list the different kinds of homes of forest animals.
- Ask students to think about the different kinds of animal homes they learned about from the read aloud. Add them to the anchor chart.
- Have students think about other kinds of animals that live in the forest and where they live. Add these ideas to the class chart.
- Using one of the animals from the anchor chart, demonstrate writing a sentence using the sentence stem “The ____ lives in a ____.”
- Model stretching out beginning, middle, and ending sounds in the animal names and animals homes as you write them.
Independent working time
(20 minutes)- Tell students that they will now choose one animal and its home. They will then draw a detailed picture and write a sentence using the sentence stem.
- Remind students to practice stretching out all of the sounds in their words as they write their sentences.
- Pass out supplies to each student.
Differentiation
Support:
- For writing support, provide students with the sentence stem “The ____ lives in a ____.”
- Students who need additional support can be provided with a list of animal homes along with their images.
Enrichment:
- Have students choose a second animal home to write about. Students can add more details to their sentence to describe what the animal home looks like.
Assessment
(5 minutes)- Assess whether students are able to identify an animal home and the animal who lives in the home.
Review and closing
(5 minutes)- Invite several students to share an animal home with the class.
- Ask students to think about the similarities and differences between two animal homes.
