Students will be able to write a narrative that includes an original song.
- Tell students a short narrative story. Remind students that narratives are stories that have beginnings, middles, and ends.
- Ask students to turn to a partner to retell what happened in the story.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Draw a picture on the board to go with your narrative story. Tell students that pictures are often used to help bring narrative stories to life.
- Explain that other art forms can be used to enhance stories. Share that today you are going to write songs to go with your narratives. These songs can be instrumental or have words.
- Show students the collection of musical instruments that are available.
- Brainstorm different songs that could be created to go with your story (e.g. music that could be used to set the tone, music that could be sung by a character in the story, or music that could be played at the end of the story).
- Take one of the song ideas and compose a quick song to accompany your narrative.
Guided Practice(5 minutes)
- Have students turn and talk to a partner about a narrative they will write about. Have them share ideas of songs they might create to enhance their narratives.
Independent working time(45 minutes)
- Hand out paper to students. Have them write their narratives.
- Direct students to use the musical instruments and/or their voices to compose a song. Encourage students who are writing lyrics to write down the words of their songs.
- If recording devices are available, record students reading their narratives and performing their songs.
Support: Have students compose a song for a previously written narrative.
Enrichment: Challenge students to compose two or more songs to accompany their narratives.
- Assess how students are using music to enhance their narratives.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Call on students to share their narrative and songs. Allow time for other students to ask questions about the stories.
