Searching for Single Sounds

  • Students will be able to proofread and identify words that need a double consonant, based on knowledge of syllabication patterns.
  • Students will be able to spell words that have a double consonant.
(5 minutes)
  • Tell the students that sometimes words are difficult to spell because they do not follow regular spelling patterns, or have additional sounds that we don’t hear.
  • Ask the students to share some examples of words that are difficult for them to spell with their partner or small group.
  • Tell the students that they will be learning to recognize and spell words that have double consonants.
(10 minutes)
  • Tell the students that sometimes words may seem to have invisible sounds. When there are two syllables with the same consonant sound right next to each other, the word may appear to have one letter, but that single sound actually needs to be spelled as a double consonant.
  • Using the teacher modeling sample words (or other words of choice), write several sentences that show the word spelled incorrectly.
  • Tell the students that you are going to identify the incorrectly spelled word by considering the syllables and single sounds. Model this process.
  • If desired, use clapping or tapping to remind the students how you can identify the syllables and the similar sounds in each syllable.
(10 minutes)
  • Ask students to complete the Single Sound Search worksheet.
  • Circulate around the room to assist students as needed.
  • If students have difficulty locating words, narrow the choices down to two or three words.

Enrichment:

  • If your students need a little extra challenge and have mastered spelling words, give them a blank grid and invite them to create their own word search with some of the more difficult words that contain a double consonant. Once they have created it, ask them to switch with a partner.

Support:

  • If your students have difficulty locating words that need to be misspelled ask them to complete the worksheet Find that Consonant!
  • Use interactive response devices to give students the opportunity to practice spelling.
  • Invite students to create a wordle with words that have a double consonant.
(5 minutes)
  • Call out several words that require double consonants, and ask students to spell the words on their whiteboards and show them.
  • Check to see that students are doubling correct consonants.
(5 minutes)
  • Invite students to participate in a spelling race at the front of the classroom.
  • Divide the students into two teams and ask them to form two lines. Tell the students that they will be spelling words as a team. Each person will take a turn writing a letter until the word is complete.
  • Give the first person in each line a marker and call out a word.
  • Repeat with several words.
  • Invite students to reflect on one strategy they can use for spelling words with double consonants.
