Sight Word Games
Students will practice reading and spelling grade level sight words.
- Gather students together for the start of the lesson.
- Say, “Today we are going to practice reading and spelling some challenging sight words. Remember that a sight word is a word that we see all of the time, yet can often be hard to sound out. We practice using these words so that we can memorize them.
- Ask, “What are some sight words that you already know how to read and spell?
- Provide time for a few students to point out or say known sight words.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Explain that today you will be teaching the students to play a game that will help them to recognize, read, and spell some challenging sight words.
- Say, “Has anyone ever played tic-tac-toe before? We play this game with a partner and try to get three in a row to win the round."
- Model how to use the game board by projecting it on the whiteboard or drawing a version on the board for the class to see.
- Explain that there might be a word that the students don’t know how to read or spell yet, so they should choose one new word to practice each round.
Guided Practice(15 minutes)
- Go over the new sight words you are using for this lesson and practice reading each word with the class.
- Hold up one of the word cards you created to display the new sight words and model choosing it as your word.
- Ask for a volunteer to come up and choose a word for their word.
- Demonstrate how to play a round with different students coming up to the board to act as your opponent.
Independent working time(10 minutes)
- Pass out the blank Sight Word Tic-Tac-Toe boards and and have students complete several rounds in pairs.
- Provide students with assistance as needed.
- Support: For struggling students, choose one or two sight words for them to use when playing the game.
Choose partners that can support one another and/or are able to play at a similar level.
- Enrichment: For more advanced students, have them play additional rounds of the game using different sight words.
- Have students choose one sight word they used in the game and write that word on an index card as part of a sentence. Use each index card as an exit ticket for the lesson.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Go over the new sight words used in the game with the class by holding up the word cards and having the students read each word with you.
- Answer student questions as needed.
