The Letter H

Students will be able to identify and write the upper case letter H.

(10 minutes)
  • Call the students together as a group and ask them if they can identify the letter H.
  • Take responses by raised hands.
  • Inform students that H is the first letter in hat, hippo, heart, holly, horse, and harp.
  • Show the students pictures of a hat, hippo, heart, holly, horse and harp.
  • Write the words Hat, Hippo, Heart, Holly, Horse, and Harp on the whiteboard each with a capital H.
  • Inform the students they will have the opportunity to practice writing the letter H.
(10 minutes)
  • Write the letter H on the whiteboard.
  • Inform the students that three lines are needed to form the letter H.
  • On the board, write each stroke of the letter H in a different color.
  • As you write, students can say, "vertical," "vertical," and "horizontal."
(10 minutes)
  • Place the students at individual desks to work.
  • Give each student the Writing the Letter H worksheet and a pencil.
  • Read the title and section one to the students.
  • Take responses by raised hands.
  • Read the instructions to section two and then section three.
(10 minutes)
  • Place the students at individual desk to work.
  • Give each student the Practice Tracing: The Letter H worksheet and a pencil.
  • Read the title and the first set of instructions to the students.
  • Read the second set of instructions to the students.
  • Allow sufficient time for the students to complete the worksheet.
  • Collect the worksheet for grading.
  • Provide the students with the H is For... worksheet and crayons.
  • Instruct the students to color the letter H and all the items that start with the letter H.
  • Provide the students with scissors, construction paper, and glue.
  • Allow the students to cut out their H and the pictures of words that begin with H. Then, paste the cut-outs on the construction paper.
  • Enrichment: Give advanced students blank sheets of paper and ask them to write the letter H free hand. Do not provide tracing or lines.
  • Support: Allow struggling students to only complete one worksheet during Independent Working Time.

  • Assess the students' independent work.
  • Give immediate feedback and correction if needed.
(10 minutes)
  • Call the students together as a group.
  • Ask the students to recall the letter that was learned today.
  • Take responses by raised hands.
  • Ask the students to recall the words that begin with the letter H.
  • Take responses by raised hands.
  • Ask the students to write the letter H on the whiteboard.
  • Take responses by raised hands.
