Which set of standards are you looking for?
Students will be able to identify parts of a book, including the roles of the author and illustrator, with prompting and support.
- Ask students what they look for when they are trying to pick a book to read.
- Ask them to identify what is important to them. For example, they might look at pictures, big text, or funny titles.
Beginning: Pair students up with a student who speaks the same home language (L1) to share what they look for in a book.
Intermediate: Provide sentence starters for students to use as they share their ideas aloud, "I look for the ____."
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(40 minutes)
- Explain to students that a front cover is very important, as it tells the name of the book, or the title.
- Ask students if they know what the person who writes a book is called. Explain that the person is an author.
- Turn to the title page, showing your students that it contains the author and title, as well as two other things.
- Explain that the third thing that is on the title page is an illustrator, or someone who draws the pictures in the book.
- Explain that the last thing that is on the title page is the name of the editor, if there is one.
- Elaborate that an editor is someone who fixes the mistakes of the author.
- Show your students the back cover, explaining that the summary on the back tells a few sentences about the book.
- Go over each key word and have students identify the definition out loud.
- Say the definitions, and have your students raise their hands to identify the words.
Beginning: Provide visuals for the new vocabulary words.
Intermediate: Have students repeat each vocabulary word after you while pointing to the matching part of the book.
Guided Practice(30 minutes)
- Divide the class into pairs.
- Pass out a story book to each pair.
- Tell students to discuss and point out the front cover, back cover, and title page to their partners. Have the partners point out the author, illustrator, editor, and title as well.
- Set the timer to five minutes.
- After that, invite students to show one or more things to the class about the book, such as the cover page or author, to the rest of the class.
- Repeat this until all students get a chance to come and show their book and elements.
- Pair students up with a student who speaks the same home language (L1) as well as English.
- Provide students with pre-picked books that are familiar.
- Provide sentence frames for students to use during their conversation with a peer.
- Provide each pair with visual vocabulary cards to use as supports.
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Instruct your students to color and write a title for the Dentist Visit Coloring Page worksheet.
- Ask them to write their names on the coloring pages as if they were the authors.
- Direct students to write a sentence about the coloring page on the back.
- Brainstorm title words with the class and record them on chart paper or the board for students to reference.
- Provide pre-written sentence frames to support students as they write about their work.
- Provide sentence starters for students to use as they write about their work.
Enrichment: Pass out three pieces of paper to each pair to represent the front cover, title page, and back cover. Ask them to write the title, draw a picture, and write their own author names on the cover page. Direct them to write the title, author, illustrator, and editor on the next title page. Then, have them write two or three sentences about their stories on the third page. Have one student edit the three sentences.
Support: Write flashcards with questions about the elements on the front and answers on the back. For example: Who wrote the book? Who drew the pictures? Pair your students up, and give them a bag of flashcards. Have one student read the questions, and direct the other student to answer.
- Individually have each student come up and identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a story book.
- Have them also point to the author, illustrator, editor, title, and summary.
Beginning: Have students match vocabulary word cards with the correct part of a book in a small group.
Intermediate: Have students identify the different parts of a book with a partner.
Review and closing(20 minutes)
- Have students present their coloring page stories to the class.
Beginning: Encourage students to turn and talk to a partner about their work.
Intermediate: Provide sentence starters for students to use as they share about their work.
