Reading Stamina

Reading Stamina

Encourage your child to do about 30 minutes of reading every day. Make sure that they have plenty of high interest books at their level. Don't forget to continue reading aloud to your child as well!
Make sure students are getting sufficient time to read independently—at this point in the year it should be up to 30 minutes per day. Try to suggest a variety of texts to see which ones meet students' interests. While students read pull small reading groups to focus on specific skills those students need to read at higher levels.

Personal Narrative: Writing Tricky Words

Personal Narrative: Writing Tricky Words

If your child is spelling a new word, have them say the word slowly before writing it to listen for each of the sounds. Have them write the sounds they hear, paying special attention to vowels.
If students ask for help as they begin to include longer words in their narratives, instruct them to say the word aloud first. Guide them to include each sound that they hear as they write the word. Tell them to listen closely for the vowel sound.
