Short O Spelling Patterns
Short O Spelling Patterns
Try rhyming to learn the short O sound. For example, trite the word "rot" down on a piece of paper. Next, ask your child if they can think of any words that rhyme with rot. Point out the similarities and differences between each rhyming word (e.g. rot, not and pot start with different consonants but are all in the -ot word family).
Word walls can be used as an interactive and dynamic tool for the classroom. It should be updated frequently and should include words that illustrate the component of word study that you are focusing on. It should also include words that can be used to spell other words. For example, "rot" can be used to teach students the short O sound and can also be used to generate other words such as "not," "shot," etc.

Place value disks are great tools for kids learning about place value. Try a few worksheets to see if they help your child.
Place value disks are an excellent manipulative to use when modeling numbers within 1,000. Eventually students will use these disks to visually represent addition and subtraction problems with 2 and 3 digit numbers. Narrative Writing & Elements of a Story
One great book to read with your child is Swimmy by Leo Lionni. It helps demonstrate the concept of protagonist vs. antagonist easily through a predator/prey relationship.
The relationship between characters is a pivotal element of a story. The main character, usually described as a protagonist, often faces a problem or a villain (antagonist) that serves as an obstacle to the protagonist meeting their goal. The predator/prey relationship is one way to demonstrate the protagonist vs. antagonist dynamic. A good read aloud text to use is Swimmy by Leo Lionni.
