Long A
Long A
The sound "ay" can be spelled as "ay" or as "a_e" (for example, clay and late). Be sure to point these common spelling patterns out to your child as you read books together.
As students get familiar with the different ways to write and read the long A sound, have them sort words looking for those different vowel patterns and teams. For example, you might ask your students if the word "day" belongs with the "a_e" words or the "ay" words.

Add Three Numbers: Make a Ten and Count On
Add Three Numbers: Make a Ten and Count On
When your child is adding three numbers together, point out that looking for combinations of 10 can make solving the problem easier. For example, with 3 + 7 + 5, start by adding 3 and 7. Then, count on 5 more to solve.
When students start adding three numbers, encourage them to make a ten when possible and then count on. For example, when adding 3 + 7 + 5, point out that 3 and 7 make 10. Then count on 5 more to solve the problem.
