Week 12

Long U
Long U
Strengthen your child's knowledge of long and short vowels by creating a long/short vowel scavenger hunt. Write words with long/short vowels on notecards (e.g. cat, gate, hug, dune, boat, shot) and challenge your child to collect them and sort them into two piles: short vowel words/long vowel words.
Make sure to use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student word knowledge. You can use student writing as a meaningful assessment by doing quick diction activities that focus on the spelling pattern of the week.

Comparing Two Three-Digit Numbers
Comparing Two Three-Digit Numbers
Use comparison words, such as smaller, bigger, least, and greatest, often to help your child become familiar with math vocabulary.
Support students by creating a chart with comparison words, such as smaller/bigger, smallest/biggest, less than/greater than, and least/greatest. Provide students with the opportunity to use comparison language in a guided setting (choral response) before asking them to complete an independent activity with these vocabulary words.

Protagonist vs. Antagonist Narrative Endings
Protagonist vs. Antagonist Narrative Endings
Support your child in writing a detailed resolution by having them explain the ending of their story orally before jotting it down on paper. Remind them that a problem should finish with a detailed resolution, and use their favorite stories to help illustrate this idea in a concrete way!
Story endings should feature some kind of resolution to the problem in the story. Student writing can sometimes feel rushed at the end, so make sure to encourage students to add the same level of juicy details they used in previous parts of their story.
