Long & Short U
Long & Short U
Play sorting games with your child to help reinforce the differences between short and long vowels. Make the learning stick by using real objects (e.g. toy unicorn, toy duck).
After teaching both the long and short sounds for a vowel, have students play a few games asking them to differentiate between the two. Students can play a memory game or do a classic word sort. This is also a great opportunity for students to create a game of their own!

Finding 1, 10, & 100 More or Less
Print out a hundreds chart to help your child visualize 10 more and 10 less.
When students are asked to move ten less than a number and change the hundreds place, scaffold by asking students how many tens are in the original number. For example, when asking what is 10 less than 408 ask students how many tens are in 408 (40). This will help them change the hundreds place mentally.

Monitoring Learning While Reading
Monitoring Learning While Reading
Help your child appreciate the gift of learning by treating books as special gifts in the home. Create a book corner in your home with a comfy chair, small bookshelf or basket to hold a variety of nonfiction and fiction books, and a notebook and pencils for your child to sketch pictures of their favorite part of the story and/or write down interesting facts they learned.
Reinforce the idea that reading nonfiction gives you the "gift of knowledge," and wrap a new nonfiction text that you will add to your classroom library in wrapping paper. Students will love unwrapping the text and discovering what is inside. This will increase engagement and foster the mindset that every book is an opportunity to learn and grow.
