Diphthongs: oi & oy

Diphthongs: oi & oy

Diphthongs are vowel sounds formed by the combination of two vowel sounds.
When introducing diphthongs (one vowel sound formed by the combination of two vowel sounds), use this clever simulation to help show students the difference between monohthongs and diphthongs. Invite students to place a finger on either side of their mouth. Have students say the vowel sound /ă/ and they will notice their finger does not move. Then have students say the vowel sound /oy/ and they will notice their finger does move because they are saying two different sounds as one.
