Diphthongs: oi, oy, ou
Diphthongs are vowel sounds formed by the combination of two vowel sounds (e.g. oi & oy).
Play a game of "Write the Room" and have students search for diphthongs around the classroom. Instruct students to record all of the diphthongs they find in their reading journals. Allow students to search for words in their textbooks, the classroom library, on posters, and in their own journals. Compare and contrast findings!

Flip through the pages of the story slowly, and ask your child to make predictions, reflect on the text features, and make connections to the book. Book walks will help your child's reading comprehension (understanding what they read).
A book walk is an essential part of nonfiction reading. You want to convey to students that they are, in a way, doing detective work. When they preview a book, they are anticipating what they might learn and in turn improving their comprehension.
