Diphthongs: oi, oy, ou

Diphthongs: oi, oy, ou

Diphthongs are vowel sounds formed by the combination of two vowel sounds (e.g. oi & oy).
Play a game of "Write the Room" and have students search for diphthongs around the classroom. Instruct students to record all of the diphthongs they find in their reading journals. Allow students to search for words in their textbooks, the classroom library, on posters, and in their own journals. Compare and contrast findings!

Place Value, Counting, & Comparisons Review

Place Value, Counting, & Comparisons Review

Make sure to check in with your child's teacher periodically to see if there are any particular topics that your child should work on at home. If you have any questions about how to work on a concept, bring a notebook to your meeting with their teacher and jot down strategies the teacher uses so you can review them at home!
Promote flexible thinking by allowing students to represent place value using a variety of manipulatives. Students can represent a number using popsicle sticks, money, place value disks, drawings, etc.

Previewing Parts of a Book

Previewing Parts of a Book

A book walk is a strategy you can use with your child before you read together. Flip through the pages of the story slowly, and ask your child to make predictions, reflect on the text features, and make connections to the book. Book walks will help your child's reading comprehension (understanding what they read).
A book walk is an essential part of nonfiction reading. You want to convey to students that they are, in a way, doing detective work. When they preview a book, they are anticipating what they might learn and in turn improving their comprehension.

Publishing

Publishing

Once your child has several edited writing pieces from school or personal work that are meaningful to them, you can work together to make the pieces into a book or special folder.
Publishing should be an exciting time for your students. It should be treated as a celebration. Have a publishing party and invite family members to attend and listen to their child share their work.
