Comma Usage
Comma Usage
Correct comma placement can feel like a daunting task for most fourth graders. Make sure to remind your hard-working child that adults share in these feelings, too! Have fun quizzing each other on comma usage rules. Then, read a book with your child, and pause every time one of you notices a comma. Discuss why the comma was used in each of these sentences!
Correct comma placement can feel like a daunting task for most fourth graders. Make sure to remind your hard-working students that adults share in these feelings, too! Correct comma usage requires remembering quite a few rules - from placing commas before coordinating conjunctions to using serial commas. These activities offer them a variety of practice and exposure to this skill.

Multi-digit Multiplication
Multi-digit Multiplication
Teaching multiple multiplication strategies can help your child grow in their conceptual understanding of this math operation. Many children don't understand why the standard algorithm works, so area models and partial products can help make that more clear. Ask your child to explain one of these strategies to you! Having them take on the role of a teacher is a great way to reinforce any concept.

Themes in Text
Themes in Text
Ask your child to explain how they figure out the theme of a text. Listen for terms, such as: big idea, lesson, moral, and supporting evidence. Why evidence? Your child is advancing in their reading abilities; they are expected to not just state their opinions, but cite evidence in a text to show why their thoughts are valid. Reading a picture book aloud can be a fun way to hunt for the theme together.
This selection of activities will get your students not only identifying the themes in a variety of texts, but also finding evidence that supports their thoughts. Get your fourth graders thinking about themes throughout the rest of the school year by recording notes in their reading notebooks; after students finish a book, have them jot down the theme on a post-it note. As students collect these post-it notes, they'll notice common themes among the books they've read.

Literary Essays: Focus on Thesis & Argument
Although your young writer is now familiar with the structure of an opinion essay, they will be flexing their writing skills as they transfer this knowledge to the literary essays. This form of writing requires your child to integrate literary reflections and responses into their writing. This type of writing proves challenging for most children! Help your child brainstorm about their literary essay by asking them about the theme and characters in the book they've chosen to write about.
