Playing with Consonants

Consonant Review

Your child will be looking at consonants and vowels at the beginning of first grade. Play a quick game by naming a letter and challenging your child to name as many words as they can that begin with that letter.
Students will need to review letters and sounds at the beginning of the year. This week, focus on the difference between a consonant and a vowel. Pick a consonant each day and have students quickly brainstorm words that begin with that letter.

Make Reading a Part of Everyday Life

Picking a "Just Right" Book

Establish routines at home to make reading a habit. You might reserve 10 minutes per day as "quiet reading time" before dinner, after school, or maybe just before bed.
Now is a good time to start going over good reader's workshop behaviors. Plan explicit mini-lessons around the behavior you expect to see during reading time.
