Synonyms & Antonyms
Try integrating synonyms and antonyms into conversations with your child. For example, if you are having dinner, you might say, "this is delicious! Some other words for delicious are tasty or yummy." Then, ask your child if they can come up with any more synonyms or make a list of antonyms together. Turn it into a game and see who can come up with the most synonyms.
Work with your students to make a list of synonyms for commonly used words, like happy or good. Make an anchor chart for each base word and keep them displayed in your classroom. When students are writing, encourage them to refer to the anchor charts to replace the common, overused words with some of the synonyms on the list.

Reading books in a series can draw in reluctant readers. When your child finds a great series that is exciting and interesting, your reader will be more likely to continue reading the subsequent books. Encourage this excitement by asking questions that compare the books within the series, like: "How has the character changed through the series? What is the setting of each book?"
To draw in reluctant readers, choose the first book of a series to read aloud to the class. Then, make the subsequent books available to students to read independently. Once students have gotten to know the characters in a series, they are more likely to show interest in the books that follow. Encourage students' excitement by asking guiding questions that compare the books within the series, like: How has the character changed through the series? What is the setting of each book?
