Subjects & Predicates

Subjects & Predicates

A good, complete sentence is made up of two parts. Support your child in becoming a skilled writer by teaching about subjects and predicates. For practice, give your child a sentence and ask them to identify the subject (the person or thing that is doing an action) and predicate (the thing being done). Challenge your child to fix fragments and run-on sentences in their own writing by using this new knowledge.
There is an art to writing quality, complete sentences. Give your students the proper tools to be great writers by teaching them about subjects and predicates. They will be equipped to write exceptional sentences and to better revise their writing when there is a fragment or run-on sentence that needs to be fixed.

The Multiplication & Division Connection

The Multiplication & Division Connection

Your child may be intimidated by division, but it's not as scary as it seems. Help your child see the relationship between division and multiplication. Practice with fact families, and discuss that there are multiplication problems that can make basic division problems easier. Continue to practice fact fluency because mathematicians still need to be quick on their feet with those facts.
The concept of division can be intimidating for some students, but helping them to understand that it is directly connected to multiplication should ease their minds. Teach your students to use the inverse operation if they are struggling with basic division. For example, 8 divided by 4 can be related to a multiplication problem: 4 times what number equals 8. If your students are fluent with multiplication facts, this should translate as they become more comfortable with the concept of division.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Your child is constantly coming across new words while reading, and with that comes a chance to build a strong vocabulary! Help to make these new words part of your child's vocabulary by keeping a notebook or a personal dictionary together. Have your young reader record, define, and use the words in original sentences. With this practice, your child will lay a solid groundwork for their vocabulary.
With each new piece of text, your students have the opportunity to learn new words! This is a powerful learning opportunity, so be sure to give them the tools to learn the words, their meanings, and how to use them correctly. It's important to provide word gathering strategies for your young readers. Consider using graphic organizers and notebooks to support your students as they grow strong vocabularies.
