Tricky Words: Homophones & Homographs

Tricky Words: Homophones & Homographs

Homophones and homographs can be really tricky for kids! Help your child learn the difference between these types of words to build a better understanding of word meaning and word relationships. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings, like brake and break. Homographs, on the other hand, are spelled the same and are sometimes pronounced the same, but have different meanings, like wind and wind. For fun, see how many words you and your child can think of and make two different lists!
Students build strong vocabularies when they understand word meanings and word relationships. Homophones are words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings, such as break and brake. Homographs are words that are spelled the same and are sometimes pronounced the same, but have different meanings, such as wind and wind. Teach your students to use the context in the sentence to figure out which word is being used. This will boost your students' grasp on these tricky words and how to use them correctly!

Book Report Presentations

Book Report Presentations

Book reports are a fun way for readers to show that they understand the story. Assist your child in preparing a book report by going over the expectations. Make sure all components are present and that your child has created a clear report based on the required elements. Last but not least, have fun and be creative!
Book reports are a fun way to engage students in their reading. When assigning book projects, provide a list of directions and expectations in the form of a rubric. This allows your students to know what you expect and how to proceed with the project. Be sure to place the most emphasis on the students' understanding and explanation of the text.
