Synonyms

Synonyms

Be sure to utilize synonyms and antonyms as you support your child's vocabulary growth. While the terms can be confusing, teach a fun trick to keep them straight! The word "synonym" starts with the letter "s." Synonyms have the same word meaning, so simply remember "synonym, same." If your child can remember that, it will be clear that the antonyms are the opposite word meanings.
When we make connections between words and their synonyms and antonyms in context, we build a strong vocabulary. Support your students as they build their vocabulary with synonyms and antonyms. Many students confuse the terms, though, so be sure to teach them a fun trick to help keep it clear. Tell your students to remember that synonym starts with the letter "s" and so does the word "same." Think "synonym, same." If they can remember that, they can remember that antonym means opposite.

Fraction Fundamentals

Fraction Fundamentals

Bring fractions to life by fractioning food. Cut pizza, oranges, or other foods into halves, quarters, and more. Using hands-on objects and a real-world context will support your child as they learn and become comfortable with fraction basics. This will serve as a powerful visual for your child.
Using manipulatives while learning about fractions is a powerful way to build a foundational understanding of fractions for students. Allow them the opportunity to be hands-on with fraction bars and tiles so they manipulate and visualize as they begin to understand that a fraction is a part of a whole. Don't forget to include real-world context when teaching about fractions, too.

Cause & Effect

Cause & Effect

Encourage your child to become a critical thinker and a strong reader. Identifying cause and effect relationships in texts is an important part of reading comprehension. Use the vocabulary "cause" and "effect" at home often, as kids often forget which is which. In everyday situations, ask your child questions such as, "What happened?" (the effect) and "Why did that happen?" (the cause).
Good readers use critical thinking skills and questioning as they navigate a text. To find the relationship between key ideas in a story, teach your young readers to ask, "What happened?" and "Why did that happen?" When they can determine causes and effects, they boost their reading comprehension. Be sure to support your students by teaching them strategies to differentiate between the cause and the effect. These can be tricky for students.

Informative Writing Structure

Informative Writing Structure

Young writers need a simple structure to follow in each paragraph. Help your child with this structure by looking at nonfiction paragraph examples. Have them color code the topic sentence and choose a different color to show the three supporting details. Use these resources to get your young writer comfortable with the structure of informational writing.
In third grade, students need a simple structure to follow in their writing. Give your writers practice with topic sentences and supporting them with details and facts. Engage your students by color coding sentences to offer a visual of the structure. Practice the same structure with different topics so students can feel comfortable and confident as they write their own informational text.
