Root Words
Root Words
A word ladder is a great way to actively analyze the structure and meaning of words. Use word ladders to encourage your child to think deeply about root words! To play, begin with one word, then make a series of other words by changing one letter or one word part (like a prefix or suffix) to make a new word. For example, the word bicycle might become tricycle, which then might become triangle. As you play, ask your child to notice any patterns that exist.
Word ladders feel like a game, but students are practicing essential literacy skills by building an understanding of word structure. Offer a variety of word study activities to keep students motivated and engaged in learning. For example, after introducing root words with a word ladder, you might review the same root words with a word matrix or show your students the root words being used in the context of a story.

Area Models & Multiplication
Area Models & Multiplication
Once your child has learned how to find the area of a rectangle, they can use the concept to visualize the multiplication of large numbers. Relating these two concepts will help them build a solid foundation that will support them in understanding more advanced math. Continue to make connections to other strategies they've learned like number decomposition, generic rectangle, and area of complex figures.

Using Text Evidence to Identify Author's Perspective & Narrator's Point of View
Using Text Evidence to Identify Author's Perspective & Narrator's Point of View
Explain to your child that, as a reader, they are an important part of the stories they read. Readers bring their own background knowledge and perspective to each story they encounter, which helps them comprehend, infer, and interpret the author's meaning. Likewise, the author, and even the characters themselves, have perpectives that make the text unique. Encourage your child to look for clues or evidence of different perpectives while reading.

Correct Comma Placement
Proper comma usage can be confusing! Make it fun by looking at examples of silly or awkward sentences. For example, you might write, "I love cooking mom." Talk about how commas could change the meaning of the sentence. Then, give your child a chance to add commas to sentences by gluing dry macaroni to paper where the commas should be in the sentences!
