Inflectional Word Endings: - ing

Inflectional Word Endings: - ing

Inflectional word endings are letters or sets of letters added to the end of words to change their meaning. For example, adding an "s" to the end of a word can make it plural.
As a class, brainstorm different endings that can go with a particular root word. Write the root word, the ending, and then the combination. Students can highlight the inflectional ending in one color and the root word in another to help them identify if the root word changes when adding an "ing."

Addition, Skip Counting, & Rectangular Arrays

Addition, Skip Counting, & Rectangular Arrays

Work on skip counting with your child (counting by 2's, 3's, 4's, etc.). This will help your child build early multiplication skills that are useful when working with arrays.
Have students write repeated addition sentences as a way to help describe an array. Remind students that repeated addition sentences can be solved by skip counting. This will help them find the total number of objects in an array.

Retelling Stories

Retelling Stories

Make it a point to tell your child about books or articles that you're reading to demonstrate retelling skills.
"Somebody-wanted-but-so" is a great summarizing strategy that can help students identify key details of a story. Students identify what the main character wanted, what conflict arose, and what the resolution was. This strategy can be used for an entire story or for a chapter of a longer book.

Information Writing: Topic Sentences & Conclusions

Information Writing: Topic Sentences & Conclusions

Ask your child to verbalize what they want the reader to remember from their writing. Help your child as they write down key points. This will support your child as they draft a conclusion.
Encourage your students to include a "call to action" in the conclusion of their writing. A call to action is when the writer instructs readers to do something now that they have learned new information on a topic (e.g. how to take care of the Earth).
