Inflectional Word Endings: Silent E & -ing
Inflectional Word Endings: Silent E & -ing
Remind your child that some words with the -ing suffix will need to drop an E at the end of the root word.
Write words with silent E or suffixes on index cards and distribute to students. Have students mingle throughout the classroom and pair up words and suffixes together. The pairs join their word and suffix to write a new word. Remind them to drop the silent E when they add suffixes that start with a vowel.

Odd & Even Numbers
Odd & Even Numbers
If your child has a good grasp on odd and even numbers, challenge them to build arrays with an odd number. This will deepen their understanding of the differences between even and odd numbers. Even numbers can be broken up into pairs or groups of two, but that does not mean that odd numbers cannot be broken up into equal groups. For example, 9 can be broken up into three groups of three.
Emphasize the relationship between doubles and even numbers. Doubles plus one or doubles minus one will always equal an odd number. For hands on learning activities, have students use tiles to create arrays. A possible extension for students who are ready could include building arrays with an odd number. This can help deepen their understanding of the differences between even and odd numbers. Even numbers can be broken up into pairs or groups of two, but that does not mean that odd numbers cannot be broken up into equal groups. For example, 9 can be broken up into three groups of three.

Retelling Stories & Sequencing
Retelling Stories & Sequencing
You can teach your child to retell a story using the 5 Finger Retell: first, next, then, after that, and finally.
Another summarizing strategy is a version of the 5 Finger Retell. Students can retell a story using one finger for each of the five main parts of the story that they read (first, next, then, after that, and finally). Do a whole class practice of the 5 Finger Retell with a read aloud before releasing students to practice this skill on their own.
