Subject-Verb Agreement
Subject-Verb Agreement
Using correct subject-verb agreement is a key skill of a good speaker and writer. Be sure to practice correct usage with your child in both conversation and written tasks. Prompt your child to choose between a singular and plural form of a verb in example sentences. Spark a discussion about how and why the subject and verb agree in the sentence.
Understanding the rules of subject-verb agreement is important to building strong writers! As a background for learning how to ensure the subject and verb in a sentence agree, students must have a foundational understanding of the subject and predicate in sentences. Support your students by giving them the opportunity to choose the correct verb to complete a sentence. Also, give your students practice fixing incorrect sentences as well as writing their own with correct subject-verb agreement.
