Write words containing 'ir", "er", and "ur" on index cards. Ask your child to sort them by vowel pattern. What do they notice? What sound do these words have in common? How are they different?
Write "ir", "er", and "ur" on index cards, and create three categories on a pocket chart. Brainstorm words that contain these spelling patterns, and record student ideas on index cards. Invite students to categorize words in the pocket chart according to spelling as a whole class or small group activity.
