Abstract Nouns
Abstract Nouns
As your child studies the various parts of speech, emphasize the difference between concrete and abstract nouns. A concrete noun is one that we can see, touch, smell, hear, or taste — an abstract noun is one that we cannot. As your child learns to identify abstract nouns, they will be more mindful of the words they use in their own writing.

Data with Pictographs and Line Plots
Data With Pictographs and Line Plots
Use these worksheets to show how graphs depict real-life scenarios, as well as the ways information can be interpreted from them. Have your child survey family members about their favorite ice cream flavors, animals, or other fun topics. Then, work together to chart the information in the form of a pictograph or line plot.
A variety of types of graphs are used to display data. Teach students about line plots and pictographs, providing examples. Highlight the ways that these graphs depict real-life scenarios, as well as the ways information can be interpreted from them. Once students are comfortable reading and interpreting graphs, distribute some word problems for them to solve.

Short Research Projects
Short Research Projects
Research is a 21st Century skill that will serve your child now and in the future. Not every research project needs to be in-depth or lengthy, however. A quality research activity can even be completed in one day. Teach your child about reliable sources, how to pick out important information, and how to organize their work — but also give them space and time to find information on their own, providing guidance when needed.
