Playing with Short Vowels

Short Vowel Sound Review

One fun way to get your child familiar with short vowel sounds is through simple rhymes. Start with a word with a short vowel sound, like "bug" or "cat," and invite your child to think of words that rhyme with it.
Be sure to review short vowel sounds at the beginning of the year with your class. Sing songs and chant poems as part of your daily routines.

Reading Independently

Reading Independently

When you're at the library or bookstore with your child, try reading a few lines of the books you're thinking of getting before you check out. This will get your child thinking about what they like to read, and help them become familiar with a variety of books.
Make sure to check in with students when they are picking books for reading time. As they read, have them answer basic comprehension questions.
