Have students create a "Reading Emergency Kit" (a pencil and a small stack of sticky notes) to help them with common reading problems in longer books. Because poems are often meant to be read aloud, a poem's punctuation, grammar, word choice, and spelling are chosen with intention. Encourage students to find words in their own poems that don't seem right, then spell them two or three different ways, circling the best attempt. After that, students can consult dictionaries or texts to identify the correct spelling. (A fun way to familiarize students with dictionaries is with dictionary scavenger hunts!)
