Solving Multi-Step Word Problems with Multiple Strategies

Solving Multi-Step Word Problems with Multiple Strategies

Math is all around us! Involve your child in day-to-day math challenges so that they begin to recognize the real-world applications of math. If you're working through simple math to figure out how to double a recipe or how to rearrange your living room furniture, talk through your process with your child. At the grocery store, ask your child to estimate the total cost of the grocery bill or calculate sales tax.
When students encounter math in the real world, it will almost always be equivalent to a multi-step word problem. Practicing strategies with standalone problems is great for developing fluency, but make sure your students have lots of exposure to real world problems so that they are prepared to think critically. Remind students that when they are solving a challenging word problem, they can use a variety of strategies to approach the problem. Invite students to model different ways they solved the same problem to illustrate the value of thinking flexibly.
