Alphabetizing
Alphabetizing
When teaching students to use reference materials, such as a dictionary or thesaurus, it can be helpful to reinforce the concept of alphabetizing — and practice spelling and vocabulary skills along the way! Reinforce this skill by having your child put this week's spelling list in alphabetical order.

Adding Decimals
Adding Decimals
Adding up decimals can be as simple as 1-2-3! Teach students to line up digits in the same place value, move the decimal point down to the answer, and then add up the numbers from the smallest place value to the largest. Remind your young mathematicians that decimals are a part of daily life, whether they are measuring or counting money. Consider printing out a restaurant menu, and asking students to find the total amount they would pay for lunch if they ordered an entree, a side, and a drink. See who spent the most and the least amount of money!

Compare and Contrast Texts
Compare and Contrast Texts
Identifying similarities and differences between a story element (such as the central theme of two fiction books) and comparing information in nonfiction texts are valuable reading comprehension skills. This series of resources offers kids a broad range of reading comprehension practice when it comes to comparing and contrasting different aspects of selected texts. One way to encourage your young reader to organize and record unique observations is through the use of a graphic organizer. For example, the Venn diagram visually displays how a child is processing key pieces of information.

Pacing Your Writing Pieces
Pacing Your Writing Pieces
Fourth graders build upon fundamental writing skills and learn how to elevate their writing in this series of activities. Pacing writing can be accomplished through strategies like formatting, description, and dialogue. After familiarizing your child with these strategies, observe them start to create interesting pieces that draw their readers in. Check in on their growth by finding a quiet, calm time to work on resources like "Using Inside and Outside Details." Discover together how to "slow down" key parts of a text by infusing writing with engaging moments.

Pacing writing can be accomplished through strategies like formatting, description, and dialogue. After familiarizing students with these strategies, observe them start to create interesting pieces that draw their readers in. One way to show students how to enrich a narrative, for example, is by selecting the activity geared toward thinking about "inside and outside" details. This will help young writers slow down certain parts of their writing for impact.
