Fractions: Models and Word Problems
Use models to help your child visualize fractions in word problems. Tape diagrams and bar models are helpful tools and can be used alongside the traditional algorithm. Remind your child that when they use the traditonal algorithm to solve division word problems, they should convert their remainder into a fraction. However, it is also important to consider the context of a word problem. One-half of a candy bar is a logical answer, but one-half of a person is not!

Narrative Writing: Letters
Narrative Writing: Letters
Who doesn't love a friendly letter? Help your child write a special poem or letter for a family member, friend, or neighbor. Encourage your child to include details that are specific to their audience. For example, if grandma loves collecting seashells, your child might choose to write about the ocean.
Writing body paragraphs is the first step in developing an informational essay. Model informational writing for your class, using a topic they are familiar with so they can focus on the task at hand. Next, write a collaborative piece with your class so that they are all involved in the process. Once students have seen several examples of informational paragraphs, they will be ready to write independently.
