Possessive Nouns

Possessive Nouns

Our speaking and writing would sound awfully clumsy without possessive nouns! Teach your child how to correctly form singular and plural possessives and how to determine when to use each one. Distinguish between possessive nouns and contractions; these can be confusing for third graders because both versions use apostrophes.

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent Fractions

Equivalent fractions are fractions that show the same value, but look different. Teach your child to multiply or divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number in order to find an equivalent fraction. (Remind them that they can't multiply or divide by zero to find an equivalent fraction, however.) .This strategy is helpful as your child gets into more complicated operations and concepts with fractions.

Reading Historical Texts

Reading Historical Texts

When learning about a new topic, we often look to several sources in order to locate the most accurate, in-depth information. Teach your child to do this by offering them two texts on the same topic. Challenge them to compare and contrast the most important points and key details in each. Have them pick out the main idea and supporting details. Which text is the more helpful source?
