Measuring and Line Plots

Measuring and Line Plots

Turn the next time you need to measure something into a learning opportunity! Show your child how you measure, and what you do with those measurements. Next, offer your child an opportunity to practice. Give them a ruler and have them measure things around the house. Challenge them to make a line plot showing the measurements of like items.
Using a ruler to measure everyday items can be challenging. Take the time to explain the ruler's features, pointing out the exact point for the number zero and modeling how to measure short lengths. Discuss fractions of an inch and help students locate the half-inch and quarter-inch marks between whole numbers. Then, give students the opportunity to practice this skill by measuring things around the classroom. Challenge students to make a line plot showing the measurements of like items.

Researching Fun Ideas

Researching Fun Ideas

As the end of the school year approaches, ask your child what they would like to learn more about. Use their answer to plan a fun research project for the summer break. Let your child select any topic, such as their favorite animal, celebrity, or video game. Help your child find books, nonfiction movies, and outings that will help them learn more about their chosen topic.
As a class, generate a list of high-interest topics like cars, movies, video games, sports, and animals. Have students pick the topic they'd like to investigate, and give them time to conduct research. When students select their own topic, they are more likely to be engaged in the research process. Provide graphic organizers to help your class organize their notes, and, when needed, use sentence frames to support them as they write.

Informational Writing: Paraphrasing Information

Informational Writing: Paraphrasing Information

Practice retelling stories out loud with your child to strengthen their paraphrasing skills. This will help prepare them to paraphrase information in their writing. Encourage your child to learn some fun campfire stories in anticipation of the summer months. Remind them to tell the stories using their own words, rather than simply memorizing the original version.
Paraphrasing nonfiction information is still challenging for fifth graders. Having been told to put information in their own words, students often just copy directly from their research sources. Practice paraphrasing by having your students relate personal stories and retell peers' stories. Next, try this with informational texts by playing a version of "telephone." Have students write a short paragraph about a familiar topic. Then have them pass their paragraph to a peer, who will rewrite it. Pass and rewrite several times before returning it to the original author.
