Order of Operations
Order of Operations
Your child will continue to rely on the order of operations as they move on to middle school math, so make sure to review PEMDAS (or GEMDAS) as they approach the end of fifth grade. Turn it into a game by presenting your child with a puzzle or a challenge. Reward each correct answer with a ticket and allow them to choose a prize when they've earned five tickets!
Your students will continue to rely on the order of operations as they move on to middle school math, so make sure to review PEMDAS (or GEMDAS) as they approach the end of fifth grade. Turn it into a game by presenting your students with a puzzle. Write an expression on the board and offer three answer choices, each with a letter associated with it. Repeat with several expressions so that, by the end, your students can spell a phrase with the letters they chose for each answer. For example, 8+2x5 equals 18 (R) and after solving all expressions, students spell RECESS!

Poetry
Poetry
Try writing poetry with your child! It is a fun and quick way to write about any topic, whether it is a narrative or informational poem. Remind your child that there are different types of poems, and encourage them to write several different poems to commemorate recent holidays or in memory of someone special. They can also write poems to remember factual information.
As the end of the school year approcahes, make sure to give your students opportunities for lots of different types of writing. If your writing time is limited, introduce short assignments, like poetry. Teach mini-lessons on various forms of poetry, like Renga, cinquain, or diamente poems. Remind your students that, when revising poetry, they should focus on the content and spelling as opposed to writing conventions like punctuation.
