Inferences & Summarizing
Inferences & Summarizing
Ask your child about books they're reading at home and at school to help strengthen summarizing skills. When children summarize they tell what the story or book is mostly about in five sentences or less. Then, ask them to make inferences about specific parts of the stories they've described.
As students learn to visualize what they're reading, they will also improve their inference skills. Have students draw a picture or comic strip to show what they've read. Then, have them put it into words with a three-sentence summary. Finally, ask them to make an inference about a specific part of the story and refer to the book and their drawings for inspiration.
