Root Words
Root Words
It can be fun to find root words like "therm" or "terr" hiding in other words. Make a scavenger hunt to find common roots in words students might see or hear. Then, ask them to guess at the meaning of the word based on the meaning of the root word.
Ask students to make charts in a Word Work notebook showing different Greek and Latin root words. Then, students can add words to the charts as they come across them throughout the year.

Looking at Author's Craft
Looking at Author's Craft
Talk about the way that different authors present a story. How are the writing styles different between various authors? What are some unfamiliar or striking words the author uses in the story? Encourage your child to discuss how the author uses words to make them feel emotions, such as sympathy, happiness, and even anger.
Students can discover an author's perspective by looking closely at how they write. The way an author organizes their writing, chooses words, and integrates text features can show us more about their point of view.
