Addition with Regrouping

Addition with Regrouping

When adding two numbers, "regrouping" or "carrying" is the process of bringing a set of 10 over from one column and adding it to the next column, such as changing 10 ones into 1 ten. Give your child real life word problems that involve addition with regrouping so that they experience the pertinence of knowing this skill.
Remind students and parents about math terms that might appear on worksheets. For example, in terms of addition, "regrouping" is the same as "carrying." Give students base ten blocks to manipulate when working on addition problems with regrouping.

Character Traits

Character Traits

Ask your child to describe one of the characters in a book they are reading. Show them a list of character traits to help them expand upon the way they describe people. Ask them to think about how the character's behavior may or may not change throughout the book.
As students immerse themselves in fiction books, help them dig a little deeper when evaluating character traits. For example, if a student notices that a character is quiet, ask them a question: "Is this character quiet throughout the entire text?" This will help them notice how character traits evolve and change over time.

Revising Realistic Fiction

Revising Realistic Fiction

Encourage young storytellers to write a first draft of something they want to work on, and then ask them to read it aloud. This simple exercise helps writers see where they need to make revisions and edits to their writing.
Students are usually comfortable adding more to their stories, but they often have trouble removing what they've already written. Model to students how quality editing and revision involves removing any unnecessary or unclear words and sentences. Let students proofread their classmates' writing to get them thinking about how to improve their own writing.
