Long & Short A Vowels
Long & Short A Vowels
Quick refresher: Long vowels say their name. So, the long A sounds like "ay."
Have students brainstorm as many words as they can that include the vowel A. Create a list and have students sort words by long and short A sounds in groups.

Measurement
Measure & Compare
Did you know that the width of a child's pinky finger is about one centimeter? Try measuring your child's fist, foot, and more to give them a mental benchmark for different measurements.
Once students are comfortable with the act of measuring and comparing different lengths of objects, begin asking students to create mental benchmarks for measurement. For example, students could use the width of their pinky finger (approximately the length of one centimeter cube, or one centimeter) to help estimate the length of a paper clip. Create a poster with different mental benchmarks that students can use.

Retelling & Summarizing
Retelling & Summarizing
Help your child learn how to retell a story with the "Five Finger Retell": first, next, then, after that, finally.
An effective retelling strategy is the "Five Finger Retell" where students retell a story in five parts: first, next, then, after that, finally. This works best for shorter texts that can be read during one reading session. Be sure to model the strategy with a read aloud text and allow opportunities for students to practice before trying this strategy independently.

Writing About the Senses
Incorporating Sensory Details into Personal Narratives
For a fun activity, do a blind taste test with your child before asking them to write about how the different foods tasted.
Adding sensory details is a way to make writing more realistic and engaging! A fun way to get students thinking about sensory details is to do a handful of activities that activate the senses. For example, create an activity where students do a blind smell test with different spices or have students touch and describe mystery objects in a bag.
