Perfecting Our Spelling

Perfecting Our Spelling

Is your child having trouble spelling particular types of words? Are they mastering consonant clusters such as bl, fr, or sp that may occur at the front of a word? Ask your child to practice writing as many words as they can think of that start with these letters.
The true assessment of spelling mastery lies within students' writing samples. Look at their writing to discover which spelling patterns they have mastered. Focusing on consonant clusters is a great place to start!

Subtraction with Regrouping

Subtraction with Regrouping

When practicing subtraction, remember that regrouping, or borrowing, refers to the process of being able to bring a 10 or 100 from a higher place value over to a lower place value. This makes subtraction with two- or three-digit numbers much easier.
Remind students and parents about math terms that may appear on worksheets. In terms of subtraction, "regrouping" has the same meaning as "borrowing." This can help when parents are assisting their children with math homework.

Character Study: Motivation

Character Study: Motivation

Ask your child questions about the characters in the book they are reading. Why might a character take—or not take—a certain action? Is that quiet kid in the book afraid of something? Does she come from a family that talks a lot? These questions can help your child figure out what a character wants.

Editing Realistic Fiction

Editing Realistic Fiction

Get a child in the habit of editing their writing by providing them with an editing checklist printout. They will be reminded to keep any eye out for accurate spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.
Establish a few editing ground rules and expectations at the beginning of the year. For example, all proper nouns need to be capitalized and words on the word wall need to be spelled correctly. Choosing a few non-negotiables to focus on at a time allows children to gain a firm grasp on these concepts without feeling overwhelmed.
