Short E Spelling Patterns
Short E Spelling Patterns
As you're looking at your child's spelling words, try to show them common spelling patterns, especially in relation to vowels.
The emphasis for spelling lessons should be about finding logical spelling patterns in words, not simply memorizing lists of words. Be sure to give students a list of words that can easily be sorted into categories based on different features.

Place Value: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, & Thousands
Place Value: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, & Thousands
Play a guessing game to learn about place value! Take a bag of popsicle sticks and pour them out onto a table. Ask your child to guess how many sticks are on the table. Then, using rubber bands, group sets of ten popsicle sticks together, then group those tens into groups of 100 popsicle sticks.
A way to pique your students' interest around place value can be done by playing a guessing game of how many popsicle sticks or straws you put onto the ground. In order for this activity to be effective, you need at least 1,000 sticks or straws. Tell students you will find this out by making "bundles" of ten sticks/straws using rubber bands. Once students have ten bundles of ten sticks/straws, you will make a bundle of one hundred. Students can work with partners or in small groups to count a portion of the total.

Examining Author's Craft
Examining Author's Craft
Your child might not know that authors make conscious choices about their word choice, actions characters take, and more. Ask your child why they think the author chose to use certain words in the book they're reading.
Students may be surprised to learn that authors are very intentional about the words they use and how the characters they create respond to events. Highlighting this fact will also help students make the connection to their own writing and encourage them to be thoughtful writers.

Personal Narrative Hooks & Endings
Personal Narrative Hooks & Endings
Encourage your child to have a 'hook' at the beginning of personal narrative writing by using dialogue, an action, a question, or any engaging text.
As with other types of writing, students need to find a way to interest their readers from the beginning. Brainstorm different ways to pique a reader's interest with the class, and create an anchor chart for them to use. A few ways to hook a reader may include starting a narrative with dialogue, action, a question, etc.
