Word Meaning & Context Clues
Word Meaning & Context Clues
As children learn about synonyms, or words with similar meanings, introduce them to the idea that similar words can still have slightly different meanings, or shades of meaning. For example, someone who is jubilant usually shows much more emotion than someone who is happy, but they both feel happy to different degrees.
As students look at expanding their vocabulary with interesting synonyms and antonyms, remind them similar words can have different shades of meaning. For example, "jubilant" and "happy" are similar in meaning, but "jubilant" indicates a greater degree of happiness than "happy" does.
