As you're reading picture books with your child, try pointing out characters or objects on the pages and note the letters they start with. For example, point to the picture of a bear and note that it starts with a 'b' sound, or the letter B.
Have students sort pictures, flashcards, items, or animals that begin with the same letter into piles. Keep it simple by only starting with a few letters (for example: a, f, n, t and b). This can be a revolving and changing activity for the first few months of school.
