# This Week in Third Grade

Week 9

## Spelling Patterns

Help your child practice their spelling words by quizzing them out loud. Then, ask them if they can think of other words that fit the same pattern. This will help your child make connections between words and have a deeper understanding of spelling patterns.
Be intentional when choosing your spelling words so students learn to make connections between words with the same patterns. For fun practice in the classroom, play spelling games in small groups or as a class.

## Multiplication and Division Strategies

It is important that your child knows how to use different multiplication strategies. This foundation will make your child a stronger mathematician as they move into the stage of rote memorization.
Before students reach instant recall of multiplication facts, they must understand how to use different strategies. This will increase their foundational understanding of what the numbers really mean.

## Building Vocabulary

Support your child in building a robust vocabulary! The next time your child asks you about a new word, show them how you figured out what the definition is rather than just telling them. Engage your child in conversations about new words and have them talk through the process of figuring out the meanings.

## Descriptive Writing

For a fun activity that will get your child writing with description, follow these steps! Give your child three pictures of something they are interested in, such as dogs or flowers. Have your child secretly choose one picture and then write a descriptive paragraph about the subject in the photo, using both adjectives and adverbs. Then, have them read the paragraph to you and see if you can guess what picture the paragraph is about.
Teach your students to add details to their writing by first letting them improve yours. Create a list of adjectives and adverbs for them to choose from, and discuss the best placement of the additional words in order to enhance the writing.
