Looking for a way to boost your child's visual perceptual skills? This matching activity does just that. Kids are given two sets of craft sticks. One has designs only in black while the other has designs only in color. They need to put those visual discrimination skills to work as they ignore the color differences and pair up the sticks with matching designs.
What You Need:
- 16 craft sticks
- Black marker
- Colored marker
- Ruler
What You Do:
- Start by getting your sticks ready. Draw your own dot designs on each stick, using between one and eight 3/8" diameter dots. Vary the dot number and spacing on each stick. Make sure each black dot design has a colored pair that matches exactly.
- Now you're materials are ready and it's time to play! First, have him lay the sticks face up and sort the sticks, putting those with colored dots together, and those with black dots together.
- Explain to him that he'll be matching up the sticks that have the same design, but different colors. Tell him to take his time and find the two that are exact matches.
When he's all done, challenge him to find the pairs with the most and the least dots. Practicing these visual perceptual skills will give him a head start in learning to recognize letters and words later on!
