Help your child reinforce parts of speech with Grammar Bingo! Learning the parts of speech starts young, but retaining it can be a challenge. Grammar Bingo is the perfect way to combine fun and learning!
What You Need:
- Bingo card templates (one per person)
- Index cards (cut into halves)
- Pen
- Hat, box, or bowl to hold the index cards
- Markers for bingo such as, buttons, pennies, poker chips, etc.
What To Do:
Set Up:
- Print out one bingo card template for each person.
- Brainstorm the parts of speech with your child. (Parts of speech: noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection)
- Have your child randomly write a different part of speech in each empty box on the bingo card template until all 24 empty boxes are filled. There will be several of the same parts of speech on one card, since there are only eight parts of speech, but that's okay!
- When all of the bingo cards are filled, help your child come up with several different examples of each part of speech. For example, verb: jump, sing, move, is, stir, watch, etc. Try to come up with at least 10 for each category. You may come up with fewer depending on the part of speech.
- As you come up with each word, write it on half an index card. You can use whole index cards if you'd like, but this way you can save paper and use those extra index cards to study or for another activity!
- Have your child place the index cards in a hat, box, or bowl and mix them up without peeking.
- Determine who will draw the cards out of the bowl and read them aloud. This can be someone who is playing or a designated card puller.
- Have each player take a handful of markers. Before you begin the game, everyone gets to mark their free space!
Playing:
- Have the designated card puller take a card from the bowl and read it. Then, each player will place a marker on the appropriate part of speech on her bingo card. For example, if the card puller draws “nor” the players will cover up one of the spaces marked conjunction. The cards will most likely have more than one conjunction, so just choose one to cover for each pulled card.
- Continue to draw cards until one person gets five in a row and yells "BINGO!" If all cards have been drawn and no one has five in a row, then place all the cards back in the bowl, mix them up, and continue to draw.
- Continue to play again and again to reinforce your child's grammar! Come up with new words once he has mastered the originals.
To add a little variety and more intense grammar review, play "blackout"! This variation of bingo requires the winning player to mark ALL of the spaces on his or her card. Other variations include "four corners" and "picture frame," depending on which spaces you need to mark to win!
