What's the difference between revising and editing? Revision involves looking at the whole paper, adding needed material and taking out things that don’t belong. It involves thinking your paper through again; literally it means a RE-VISION! Editing, on the other hand, only deals with the minor issues of the paper in its final stage of revision. In the editing stage, you correct spelling errors, add or change punctuation, and change wording.   Assure your child that revising is not an easy process and that it takes time and a lot of dedication to create a truly well-written paper. With your child's most recent writing assignment, a colored pen and a pencil, you can help guide your child though revision. Here are some tips to pave the way:

  • A checklist can serve as a great reminder of what to look for in the revision process. Write these questions down on a piece of paper and tack them up near your work area:

Did you provide a clear description of each main character?

Did you include a description of the setting?

Does your paper follow a clear, logical sequence?

Did you only include the necessary details?

  • Take a break between writing and revising.  Even a five-minute break is productive because it helps you get some distance from what you have written. The goal is to return with a fresh eye and mind.

  • Read through your writing slowly. Many errors are made and overlooked by speeding through writing, so taking time to carefully look over your writing will help you to catch errors you might otherwise miss. If you read at a normal speed, you won't give your eyes sufficient time to spot errors.

  •  Role-play. While reading, put yourself in your audience's shoes. Playing the role of the reader encourages you to see the paper as your audience might.

  • Get others involved. Asking a friend to read your paper will let you get another perspective on your writing and a fresh reader will be able to help you catch mistakes that you might have overlooked.

Compare your child’s first draft with their final draft. They should see an amazing improvement at the clarity and quality of their revised composition. Celebrate your child’s accomplishment by letting them showcase their writing to others.
