Watch it Grow: A Fun Science Activity
Topics: Fourth Grade, Science
During this spring break, teach your fourth grader a lesson through gardening! In this activity you’ll see how going through the process of planting something special will give your child a tremendous sense of responsibility and perhaps a green thumb!
What You Need:
something special to plant
What You Do:
Start by taking a trip to the local nursery to choose your plantings. Encourage your child to ask questions about what to plant this time of year and what his options are.
Step 2
After your child has chosen what he wants to plant, make sure he asks questions; how much sunlight it should get? How often should it be watered? Etc... Using his newfound knowledge, let your child choose a location on your property to plant his seeds or flowering plant.
Step 3
Get a wooden stake to place next to your child’s plant. Have your child make a design on it. He can even come up with a special name for his plant.
Step 4
Make it your child’s responsibility to care for the plant and check on it every few days. As an extension, you can even have your child chart his plant’s growth over time.
