1st Grade Activities
First grade is a year of firsts: your child's first full day of school, the first time she'll write a small story herself, and the first time she'll read a complete book cover to cover. We've got dozens of wacky reading and math activities, cool science experiments, and indoor and outdoor games to keep the learning fun.
Cover All
Use your number sense to complete this activity. Draw from a deck of cards to determine your number. Create an addition problem with that sum. Try to use as many numbers as possible in a quest to take over the game board!
Make Chocolate Gelt for Gifts or the Dreidel Game
Make your own gelt this Hanukkah to give as a gift to friends and family or to use to play the classic game of Dreidel.
Build a Snow Person ... Indoors!
This winter, try building your child's very own snow person indoors. Instead of freezing cold snow, this activity uses fun (and messy!) art materials to build a cool sculptural creation that explores the art of three dimensional form.
Make a New Year's 2010 Headband
Make this festive New Year's headband with your child this holiday season to ring-in the new year and give your child some great fine motor practice while she's at it!
Cover Up
Check out this exciting way to practice addition! This two player game uses dice to get its point across. Players add up numbers to find different sums. There is plenty of repetition, which makes this game a fun alternative to flash cards.
Create a Menorah
This Hanukkah, get your child in the holiday spirit by making a homemade menorah! Since most of the materials for this project can be found around the house, it's simple and inexpensive and is a good way to teach your child about recycling.
Double Trouble
Try this competitive card game! Your child will practice doubling numbers as you flip over cards. Try one-digit or two-digit numbers, or more!
Save the Ducklings
Sneak a little addition and counting practice in with this creative game! Your kindergartner or first grader will love trying to save all of the ducklings from the trap! Add up the total when you roll the dice and count out those ducklings. Hopefully, they will be safe in your hands!
Half As Much
Sharing can be a challenge, and division doubly so! Practice halving numbers in this competitive card game. Play in groups or coach your child through one-on-one.
Defensive Struggle
Looking for a fun way to practice your addition facts? This game combines strategy with math! You and your child will battle to control the game board and earn points.
