4th Grade Activities
From cool card games that teach place value, to outdoor activities that introduce buoyancy, reading activities, writing, and more, we've got what you need to keep learning on the go. So, clear off the kitchen table and round up the family. Here's a stack of things to do with your fourth grader.
Have a Word of the Day Competition
Increase your child's vocabulary with this fun, competitive game. One word is picked out of a bag each day, and whoever uses it correctly the most times wins! This game will help build your child's word bank, and can even help her score higher on those tricky standardized tests!
Delicious Classification: Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Fourth grade students learn about classifying animals into groups, and they begin by classifying the vertebrates (animals with backbones) and the invertebrates (animals with no backbones). Try this fun and tasty activity with your fourth grader to help her learn about life science.
Start a Book Club!
Fourth grade is not too early to start a book club for young readers. A book club is a great way to help keep your child's mind active over the summer as she engages with the materials she's reading. She'll build up her comprehension and critical thinking skills and she'll have fun along the way!
Hammered Plant Science
Try hammering some plants with your fourth grader to teach her a valuable science lesson, while making beautiful artwork in the process!
Make a Sand Clock
An hour glass, sometimes called a sand glass or a sand clock, keeps time. In this activity, your child will make her own sand clock, and learn to measure the time it keeps.
Use Yeast Science to Inflate Balloons
This experiment will introduce your child to the concept that carbon dioxide is produced by yeast. We will also observe which sugars best “feed” the yeast using balloons.
Tessellation Explorations
Fourth grade is a fabulous time for math play! Here is a math activity that blends with art: making shapes that nest into one another, or "tessellate."
"Yellow Pages" for a New Neighbor
Here's an activity that takes fourth grade reading and writing skills beyond the classroom to offer a warm welcome to a new neighbor...who may just turn out to become a very good friend as well.
Sew a Colorful Amish Potholder
The careful measurements and piecing of quilting happen to provide outstanding practice in spatial reasoning and early geometry. Quilting is also a great way to connect with the past hands-on. Help your fourth grader stitch all these ideas together by letting them quilt something of their own.
Experiment with Toffee Science
Take some butter, sugar, and a curious fourth grade chef, add some heat on the stove and some scientific principles about the different states of matter -- and you can have a delicious batch of Toffee Science on your hands.
